A prophet is...

A prophet is neither a super-person, nor a person with super powers, nor a super holy person, nor a person nearer to 'perfect' than you or I.

A prophet is a normal person who is called to testify to what he or she sees clearly: simply that our God who loves us is the only Super One.

i like that... it de-mystifies the position, and takes away the expectation of perfection from a regular human being

Yeah, because it's not about the prophet, it's about GOD! If the prophet is a prophet indeed, he or she will gladly say, "It's not about me, it's about HIM!"

The only time "the spirit of prophecy" is mentioned, it's mentioned by an angel that God sent to show future things to John in Revelation. John is so impressed by all he's been shown that he falls down at the angel's feet, the angel stops him and essentially says, "Hey, it's not about me! Prophecy is about Jesus! He's the point!"

The essence of prophecy is to testify about Jesus. 1st John says that "God's testimony" is about His Son, that we have life in Him. Is there any greater testimony than God's own? Is not the testimony of God's one & only Spirit (who also happens to give prophetic gifts) the one and same testimony? That we have life in His Son! It's all about You, Jesus!
